Quick answer: Choose a starting unit and a target unit, then enter a value. Common conversions: 1 °C = 33.8 °F; 1 °C = 274.15 K; 1 °C = 493.47 °R. This converter covers 5 temperature units.

Use the Temperature Converter

Temperature formula and what each symbol means

Convert the value to K with the unit rule in the table, then convert from K to the target unit.

Symbols used in the formula

Temperature examples

°C to °F

37 °C = 98.6 °F.

°C to K

37 °C = 310.15 K.

°C to °R

37 °C = 558.27 °R.

How to calculate Temperature step by step

  1. Choose the starting unit and the target unit.
  2. Enter your value.
  3. Read the converted value; the tool applies each unit’s scale and offset through the base unit.

How to read your Temperature result

Temperature scales have different zero points, so conversions use a multiply-and-add formula, not one factor alone. Water freezes at 0 °C, 32 °F and 273.15 K, and boils at 100 °C, 212 °F and 373.15 K at standard pressure.

Degree Celsius°CK = °C × 1 + 273.151 °C
Degree Fahrenheit°FK = °F × 0.55555556 + 255.3722233.8 °F
Degree Rankine°RK = °R × 0.55555556493.47 °R

Common mistakes when calculating Temperature

  • Multiplying by 1.8 but forgetting to add 32 when converting Celsius to Fahrenheit.
  • Converting a temperature difference with the same formula: for differences only the scale factor applies, with no offset.
  • Using 273 instead of 273.15 when you need accurate kelvin values.

Temperature FAQ

What is the formula to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 (1.8) and add 32.

What is the formula to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value and multiply by 5/9.

What is absolute zero?

Absolute zero is 0 K, which equals -273.15 °C or about -459.67 °F.

What is the base unit for temperature?

This converter uses kelvin (K) as the common base unit: every value is first converted to it and then to the target unit.

How do I convert between two temperature units?

These units do not share a simple multiplier, so each conversion goes through the base unit using the formula shown in the table.

How many Fahrenheit are in 1 Degree Celsius?

1 °C = 33.8 °F.

How many Kelvin are in 1 Degree Celsius?

1 °C = 274.15 K.

How many Rankine are in 1 Degree Celsius?

1 °C = 493.47 °R.

Which temperature units does this converter support?

It covers 5 units: Kelvin (K), Degree Celsius (°C), Degree Fahrenheit (°F), Degree Rankine (°R), Degree Réaumur (°Ré).

How accurate is the temperature converter?

Results are calculated at full double precision and shown to about 8 significant figures. Round the answer to the precision of your original measurement; a result cannot be more accurate than the number you started with.
